MPV used car prices, depreciation and resale value study

The multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) market encompasses a variety of models across different price brackets. For this analysis, we examined all available options, from the economical Maruti Eeco to the pricier Kia Carens. Although the Toyota Innova Crysta is often regarded as the benchmark in the MPV arena, it has been excluded from this study due to insufficient data.

Used MPV resale value, price and depreciation

*ASP represents average selling price; DEP indicates depreciation.

The Maruti Eeco, especially its CNG variant, shows exceptional residual value. Its practical design and affordability significantly boost its appeal in the secondary market.

Interestingly, models like the Renault Triber, Maruti Ertiga, Kia Carens, and Maruti XL6 demonstrate slower depreciation compared to their counterparts. In contrast, the Mahindra Marazzo, which faces challenges in generating new car demand, experiences swift depreciation, with units that are three years old frequently listed for around 50% of their original on-road price.

Overview of the Autocar India-Spinny Resale Value Study

This analysis stems from a collaborative study between Autocar India and Spinny, a prominent used car platform active in 22 cities across India, including key locations such as Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Spinny supplied average selling prices (ASP) compiled from genuine transactions involving 21,944 cars sold within its network during the 2024 calendar year. For uniformity in the study, various engine options with the same fuel type or multiple variants of a model were averaged. The depreciation figures were calculated by comparing a vehicle’s on-road price at the time of its manufacture to its resale price in 2024.
