KTM 390 Adventure X review

Following the legacy of its predecessor, the KTM 390 Adventure X offers a compelling alternative to the higher-end versions, promising to provide around 90% of the original experience at a much lower cost. The completely redesigned motorcycle for 2025 showcases enhanced performance, advanced features, and superior handling, all for an additional price of just Rs 11,000 compared to the previous model.

The 390 Adventure X lacks cruise control.

Design and Quality of the KTM 390 Adventure X (7/10)

High-resolution TFT display enhances the motorcycle’s appeal

The motorcycle’s bright headlight provides excellent illumination, arguably one of the best in its class. Additionally, KTM has upgraded from the monotone LCD in the previous ‘X’ model to a vibrant and clear TFT screen, contributing to an upscale feel. The quality of the switchgear stands out, despite the absence of a cruise control rocker switch.

The seating position on the 390 Adventure is upright and authoritative

Riding Position and Comfort of the KTM 390 Adventure X (8/10)

The X maintains identical ergonomics to the 390 Adventure, but features a slightly lower seat height

With only a slightly reduced seat height, the X retains the comfortable and commanding upright posture found in the regular 390 Adventure. However, the fixed windscreen limits airflow, which can be challenging during hot city rides. The firm seat can contribute to saddle discomfort after an hour or two, which isn’t ideal for long tours. Though these aspects are concerning, they are not deal-breakers.

The X corners impressively and feels stable

Performance and Refinement of the KTM 390 Adventure X (8/10)

Our tests show the 390 Adventure X accelerates from 0-100kph in just 6.04 seconds

Equipped with the same engine as the standard 390 Adventure, the X presents a more manageable and approachable riding experience. This is primarily due to its resembling of a ‘Road Mode’ characteristic from the regular model. While it may not feel as aggressive, the performance remains competitive within the segment, making it the fastest motorcycle available.

Despite its alloy wheels, the X performs well on mild trails

Another pleasant surprise is the reduced noise from the tires, which is a noticeable improvement over the standard bike. However, a downside is the quickshifter, which requires considerable effort to engage and was mostly ineffective on our test bike. Fortunately, the X’s light clutch allows for smooth and enjoyable manual shifting.

Regarding braking, the X performs comparably to its counterpart, despite lacking sintered brake pads. Our braking evaluations resulted in similar performance metrics, although the lever feedback isn’t as refined as the standard ADV. The seat height and weight have been slightly reduced by 5mm and 1kg, respectively, indicating positive changes.

The X utilizes organic brake pads that perform nearly identically

Ride Comfort and Handling of the KTM 390 Adventure X (8/10)

The X’s non-adjustable suspension delivers performance that rivals the higher-spec adjustable setup

Despite featuring non-adjustable suspension and alloy wheels, the X exhibits a high level of capability off the road. With wheel travel of 200mm/205mm on each end, it performs almost as well as the fully equipped 390 Adventure, albeit with slightly diminished feedback from the smaller front wheel. For on-road riding comfort, our findings show that both Rishaad and I preferred the non-adjustable arrangement on the X, as it handles poor road conditions with ease and less fuss.

The TFT display’s graphics and interface lend it a premium feel.

Features and Safety of the KTM 390 Adventure X (8/10)

The absence of certain features does not detract from the overall experience

The ‘X’ model lacks features such as cruise control, riding modes, cornering ABS, and adjustable brake and clutch levers. While the absence of cruise control was disappointing, I can overlook it given the cost savings. It’s a convenience for long rides, but the price trade-off is justifiable.

The 390 Adventure X is significantly more budget-friendly than the standard 390 Adventure.

Pricing and Conclusion for the KTM 390 Adventure X (9/10)

The ‘X’ is priced Rs 77,000 less than its higher-spec counterpart

Taking into account the price difference, the 390 Adventure X makes a compelling argument for those seeking affordability while still enjoying nearly all the advantages of the 390 Adventure platform. For riders looking to maximize performance at a reasonable cost, KTM continues to offer the fully equipped 390 Adventure and the Enduro R for dedicated off-road enthusiasts.

If you seek an affordable, lightweight adventure motorcycle that exceeds expectations within its price range, the 2025 KTM 390 Adventure X is an excellent choice. If you prefer a bit more comfort and usability in a similar price range, the Royal Enfield Himalayan provides a more substantial feel but weighs more.
