Verstappen Wins Imola GP
Early Race Pass Sets Up Victory
Verstappen executed a crucial race-winning maneuver right from the beginning. The Red Bull driver passed Piastri around the outside of Turn 2 by out-braking him, subsequently establishing a significant lead over the rest of the competitors.
McLaren opted for an early pit strategy with Piastri on Lap 14, while Verstappen remained on track. This strategy backfired when Esteban Ocon’s car stopped on Lap 29, resulting in a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period. Consequently, drivers who had not yet pitted, including Verstappen, capitalized on this situation to change to fresh tires without losing much time. By the time Verstappen re-entered the track, he boasted approximately a 20-second lead over Norris.
The Safety Car was deployed on lap 46 after Kimi Antonelli faced a throttle issue on track. However, Verstappen expertly managed the restart, finishing with an impressive advantage of 6.109 seconds. “Once we got into the lead, we showed what we could do with the pace of the car, and I could push quite well,” Verstappen commented, noting the stability and improvements made in the car’s setup.
Norris Overtakes Piastri for Second Place
Late Race Drama Following Antonelli’s Retirement
Norris’s strong performance capitalized on Antonelli’s retirement, which added drama to the final laps. During the Safety Car period, Norris, Alex Albon, Hamilton, and Hadjar all pitted, while Piastri chose to stay out. Utilizing fresh tires to his advantage, Norris overtook Piastri for second place on Lap 54 out of 63.
Piastri was ultimately left to settle for third place, finishing nearly 6 seconds behind his teammate. “We had a solid strategy with the two-stop plan; however, we couldn’t fully optimize it due to the VSC and Safety Car deployments,” Piastri explained. “We’ve accumulated a healthy amount of points, and we will debrief before focusing on the next race in Monaco.”
Ferrari and Hamilton’s Comeback
Williams Drivers Shine in Top 10 Finishes
After a challenging qualifying session, Hamilton started from P12 on the grid but showcased strong race pace to recover and finish in fourth place. The Ferrari team displayed competitive performance, with Charles Leclerc and Albon battling fiercely for fifth position. Albon managed to clinch the spot on the final lap, continuing Williams’ impressive streak. George Russell secured seventh place overall for Mercedes, followed closely by Carlos Sainz from Williams. Hadjar mirrored Verstappen’s strategy, finishing with a commendable P9 result, while Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the points finishers following a strong recovery from the pit lane.
2025 F1 Championship Standings
Piastri’s championship lead is now narrowed to 13 points ahead of Norris, while Verstappen has moved closer, trailing by just nine points. The next exciting event on the F1 calendar is the prestigious Monaco GP, where a mandatory two-stop strategy will be in effect for all drivers.
