Bajaj Pulsar headlight

During a recent investor call, Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, announced the development of an ‘entry-level’ 125cc motorcycle. This new model is expected to hit the market in the fiscal year 2026.

Current Market Landscape

  1. 125cc bike sales are nearly on par with the 100cc segment today.
  2. 28% of the motorcycle market’s sales stem from the 100cc category.
  3. The specifics of this new 125cc bike remain to be seen.

What to Expect from the New Bajaj 125cc Bike?

Possible Brand Positioning

Bajaj currently offers a range of four 125cc models priced between Rs 85,178 and Rs 1.11 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), effectively covering various segments of the 125cc motorcycle market. Available models include the original Pulsar 125, Pulsar NS125, Pulsar N125, and the innovative CNG-powered Freedom bike. However, the specific branding for this new 125cc motorcycle remains uncertain, leaving room for speculation.

One potential direction is the revival of the CT125X, which was recently discontinued. This model could re-emerge with significant updates, as the CT series has a history of being robust and aimed at cost-conscious consumers. Another intriguing option could be the reintroduction of the Discover brand, which has been absent from the market for several years.

In regards to branding strategy, Rakesh Sharma stated in the earnings call, “That question is still open. As the product develops its specifications and final design, we will determine how to brand it. I can share that the 125cc segment, distinct from 125cc+, is almost equivalent to the executive 100cc segment, representing around 28 percent of the Indian motorcycle market. We can anticipate two or three sub-segments emerging here. The Freedom model, while a 125cc, appeals across different cc classes and serves long-distance riders who prioritize fuel efficiency. Whether there’s room for another brand alongside Pulsar will rely on careful analysis of the uniqueness of these sub-segments. We are currently assessing this and will provide updates closer to the product launch.”
