I find myself in familiar territory. This time last year, I was at the CoASTT high-performance center, battling the heat with the keys to a 911 in my grasp. The excitement I felt then returns as I stand with the latest version now.
However, this year brings a notable shift; last year, I had the privilege of driving the pinnacle of modern engineering, the GT3 RS. This model represents the peak in the 911 lineup, whereas now we are back to the base model, experiencing the essence of the 992.2 Carrera.
Porsche 911 Carrera Exterior Design and Engineering
Only aficionados will spot the wider LEDs that mark out the 992.2.
Don’t be fooled by the striking wing; this isn’t a GT3 variant but rather an Rs 11 lakh aero kit option. In true Porsche fashion, there’s an abundance of options available for the Carrera (this vehicle boasts Rs 67 lakh worth), enhancing its look, feel, and performance. Yet, I assure you, even without these add-ons, you still acquire one of the finest sports cars on the market.

One of the often-overlooked qualities of the 911 is how effortlessly anyone can get in and experience speed. Immediately upon entry, the cockpit feels inviting and recognizable. Even if you’re a first-time driver, the excellent forward visibility, slim A-pillars, noticeable raised fenders, a comfortable driving position, a slim steering wheel, and a clean dashboard all work together to ease your transition.
Porsche 911 Carrera Interior and Features
As expected in contemporary vehicles, the 911 has adapted to incorporate screens; it features a 10.9-inch touchscreen, and behind the steering wheel, the classic analogue tachometer has been replaced with a fully digital display. Nevertheless, Porsche deserves kudos for maintaining simplicity, clarity, and minimal distractions across both screens.

The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) 6.0 interface stands out as one of the most straightforward yet feature-packed systems available. Even with the digital transition, the displayed dials still resemble traditional ones and come with various configurations, including the classic 911 five-dial setup or a full map display. You can even adjust the tachometer to display the redline at the top.

While the rear seats are by default absent, they can be added if desired at no additional cost. However, one change I find less appealing is the switch from the twist-to-start ignition knob to a conventional push button; a slight but noticeable diminishment of driver engagement.

Discussing the notion that choosing the ‘entry-level’ Carrera limits driver engagement, I must emphasize that the twin-turbo 3.0-litre flat-six engine does not disappoint. With 394hp and 450Nm of torque, it may not sound powerful compared to other sports cars, but its performance is more than sufficient. Even on the racetrack, where speed is of the essence, it never feels underpowering.

Witnessing its breathtaking sound from the optional sports exhaust, immediate throttle response, and relentless power delivery up to 7,500rpm contributes to this exhilarating experience. While it may not match the goosebump-inducing sound of the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine found in the GT3s, it comes remarkably close. The accessible power it delivers potentially makes it more practical for daily driving.
Moreover, improvements over the previous 992.1 Carrera model include upgraded turbos sourced from the previous 911 GTS and new intercoolers derived from the Turbo S, ensuring enhanced performance.
Porsche 911 Carrera Ride and Handling
While the engine’s excellence is undeniable, what defines the essence of a 911 is its chassis, which remains superb. A notable downside, however, is the absence of handling-enhancing options available for the Carrera, unlike higher-tier 911 models. Although adaptive dampers come standard, features like active roll stabilization (PDCC), carbon-ceramic brakes (PCCB), and rear-wheel steering are not available.

It speaks volumes about the solidity of the core chassis that this absence doesn’t detract from the overall experience. Sixty years of refinement have transformed a traditionally unbalanced weight distribution into an adeptly balanced one. While it may lean slightly towards pendulousness, the rear-engine design adds a lively character to the car during cornering.

With no engine weight at the front, the steering remains uncompromised. It is sharp, weighty, and provides remarkable communication directly to your fingertips. The car’s limits are high, yet they are clearly defined, allowing me to intuitively gauge how far to push the throttle to induce a bit of oversteer without losing control. There’s nothing quite like track time!
Porsche 911 Carrera Price and Verdict
The truth is, the new Porsche 911 Carrera doesn’t feel “entry-level” at all. With a starting price of Rs 2.11 crore (ex-showroom), it mirrors the initial pricing of the previous-generation Turbo. And once you begin exploring the extensive options list, the potential for cost increase is vast.

While our driving experience on the road was limited, it is easy to anticipate its performance in that setting. Opting for the nose-lift kit is a must-have addition. The ride quality is firm yet compliant, and it’s advisable to avoid larger wheel sizes if comfort is a concern. The trunk space is more accommodating than its 135 liters would suggest.
Ultimately, the fact that this car puts a smile on my face, just as the GT3 RS did last year, is a testament to its excellence. It shows that the humble Carrera covers 85 percent of the experience, with moving up the lineup being more about diminishing returns. This isn’t to undermine the benefits of a Turbo S, GT3, or the GTS hybrid, but rather to emphasize that any 911 you choose is sure to delight.
