Aprilia Tuono 457 track review: Raising the bar

Recently, we had the opportunity to take the Tuono 457 to the CoASTT High Performance Centre for our annual track event. While I did not have the chance to test it on the road, experiencing it on the track made the wait well worth it. Its performance was so impressive that it warranted a dedicated story.

Design of the Aprilia Tuono 457 (8/10)

An attractive design that misses the classic Tuono face.

The Tuono serves as a street version of the RS 457, featuring the same engine, chassis, suspension, brakes, and tyres. While the fuel tank has undergone subtle modifications, the upright handlebars significantly alter the bike’s ergonomics. To our surprise, the lap time achieved by Rajini Krishnan was almost on par with the RS 457’s from our 2024 Track Day. Despite lacking clip-ons and wind protection, and bearing a lighter front-end load, it held its ground impressively. This is a noteworthy feat.

The shape of the fuel tank has been slightly altered on the Tuono.

A few factors contributed to the Tuono’s success this year. The track surface at CoASTT was in better condition compared to our previous visit, the weather was more favorable, and familiarity with the circuit certainly played a role. Additionally, the bike was equipped with the optional quickshifter, which Rajini found beneficial. While it costs Rs 20,000—a considerable investment for a bike under Rs 4 lakh—its performance greatly enhances the riding experience.

Ergonomics of the Aprilia Tuono 457 (6/10)

Seating height is friendly but may feel cramped for taller riders.

As with the RS 457, the engine remains the standout feature, and Aprilia’s 457cc parallel-twin engine continues to lead the segment. With 48 horsepower and impressive torque, the specs tell only part of the story. The engine operates smoothly with a sharp throttle response and delivers a rich, evocative sound. The broad, sculpted tank beneath the rider, along with the superbike-like growl of the engine, creates a thrilling atmosphere each time you accelerate.

However, not everything is perfect. The ergonomics may leave taller riders feeling constrained, especially during track sessions. I found myself positioned against the rear seat bump stop, with the feeling of slipping on the bike’s bodywork. The already compact RS 457 felt more spacious due to its more forward-set clip-ons, making the Tuono’s configuration feel more restrictive.
Implementing some grip tape and modifying the rear seat could offer more space for the rider, but individuals near 6 feet tall may still find this bike tight—particularly due to the recesses in the fuel tank that limit knee movement—not just on the racetrack.

Performance of the Aprilia Tuono 457 (9/10)

Strong mid-range power compensates for a flat top-end and pleasing acoustics.

Beyond performance metrics, the Tuono 457 is engaging, lively, and crucially, fast enough to keep every riding session thrilling. The combination of the aluminum chassis, firm suspension, and excellent Eurogrip Pro Torque Xtreme tyres makes this bike, alongside the RS 457, one of the best-handling motorcycles produced in India.

The quickshifter is an impressive option, yet costly.

CoASTT features a flowing layout with minimal heavy braking zones, and while the known issue of front brake fade exists with the 457, it did not pose a problem this time. However, for those planning to track the bike in areas with more intense braking demands, upgrading the brake pads, fluid, or master cylinder may be necessary.

Handling of the Aprilia Tuono 457 (9/10)

An excellent chassis, suspension, and tyre combination, yet brake fade remains a concern.

What distinguishes the Tuono is that it doesn’t simply detune the RS to compromise performance for comfort. It retains the same spirit and capability, offering similar lap times. Nevertheless, there are areas needing attention. For one, the bike’s size and its design are less visually appealing compared to the RS 457, which has more recognizable styling connected to its larger siblings.

Moreover, there have been recent customer reports of unexpected reliability concerns regarding the engine, an issue that Aprilia needs to address promptly. From a performance perspective, however, the Tuono 457 has far exceeded expectations, a rarity in today’s market.

Verdict on the Aprilia Tuono 457 (9/10)

Almost as capable as the RS 457 with significantly improved seat comfort.

What stood out during my time with this bike is its competitive edge against rivals. Whether compared to KTM’s single-cylinder models or Yamaha’s twin-cylinder offerings, the Tuono operates at a higher level—especially on a fast circuit like CoASTT that emphasizes both power and fluidity. Its lap time aligns more closely with more powerful models such as the Suzuki GSX-8R and Ducati Hypermotard Mono than with competitors like the KTM 390 Duke and Yamaha R3.
