CFMoto 700MT review with expected India launch details

We had the opportunity to test ride the CFMoto 700MT in Portugal, alongside the newer CFMoto 675s. While the 700MT may not display the same level of dynamics as these three-cylinder models, it significantly stands out by delivering a remarkable motorcycle experience at an exceptionally competitive price. This bike is priced at €6,900 in Italy, making it more affordable than the KTM 390 Adventure R in that region. It promises a full-sized adventure touring experience that rivals motorcycles priced much higher.

CFMoto 700MT Engine and Performance

The engine is adequate but lacks excitement

The CFMoto 700MT is driven by a 693cc parallel-twin engine, which the manufacturer claims is a significantly enhanced iteration of their previous 650 engine—originally modeled after Kawasaki’s 650 twin. According to CFMoto, this latest engine version delivers not only improved riding pleasure but also enhanced reliability.

The 693cc engine is quick and responsive but lacks thrilling performance.

While riding, the engine doesn’t have the modern vibrancy associated with a 270-degree crank but instead resembles the more classic, gruff behavior of the Kawasaki 650. Although it doesn’t shine in character, it excels in practical application. The engine provides good tractability, flexibility, and pulls smoothly across the rev range. There’s a palpable vibration felt through the footpegs, yet handlebars remain well-isolated from any harshness. The gear ratios are appropriately spaced, ensuring that the bike performs well whether navigating roundabouts in third gear or cruising at 120 kph in sixth gear. Although it offers 68hp and 60Nm for those who prefer to push it to higher revs, the motor is best appreciated when ridden in a laid-back manner, allowing you to enjoy its midrange capabilities effortlessly.

CFMoto 700MT Suspension and Comfort

The suspension offers limited travel but maintains composure

Riding the 700MT along picturesque winding country roads, it proved to be a delightful companion at a relaxed tempo. This motorcycle encourages a leisurely riding style that allows you to soak in the scenery and enjoy the journey. Its comfort is supported by well-thought-out ergonomics, with a seat height of 800mm that is inviting for most riders. However, the seat’s width may pose challenges for shorter individuals trying to reach the ground with both feet.

Standard equipment includes cross-spoked tubeless wheels.

The suspension system only provides 150mm of travel, which performed admirably on the roads in Portugal; however, it is important to note that this is not intended as an off-road motorcycle. Nonetheless, for long-distance tarmac touring and occasional rough patches, the suspension feels stable and grounded. It may not float over uneven surfaces like more luxurious adventure bikes, but it handles them with a reassuring poise. Its overall identity is somewhat reminiscent of the Kawasaki Versys, despite its more adventure-oriented aesthetics, including spoked wheels and a 19-inch front tire.

CFMoto 700MT Weight and Handling

The bike is heavy but offers decent handling

One notable drawback is its weight. The 700MT appears sizable, and its heft reflects this—tipping the scales at 240kg without any additional accessories, or 258kg equipped with three optional aluminum panniers. This places it firmly in the full-sized adventure motorcycle category, even exceeding the weight of the BMW R1300GS.

From the rider’s perspective, the bike feels substantial, yet the steering is surprisingly light, making it maneuverable. An intriguing aspect is the windscreen’s positioning; it sits nearly three feet ahead of the rider, which means adjusting it on the move requires a bit of reach. The benefit of this is substantial wind protection. During our test ride, which took place in cold and wet conditions, the high position of the windscreen proved to be exceptionally effective in providing comfort against the elements.

CFMoto 700MT Features and Quality

Premium elements like a TFT display and cross-spoke wheels

Although CFMoto is a brand associated with budget products, the features and craftsmanship of the 700MT suggest otherwise. The fit and finish are commendably high, with a 5-inch TFT display displaying smooth graphics and an intuitive layout. The motorcycle is equipped with switchable ABS, basic traction control, adjustable suspension, and tubeless spoked wheels. However, it lacks features such as a bi-directional quickshifter and cruise control, primarily due to its cable-operated throttle system.

The 5-inch TFT display boasts a clean and user-friendly interface.

CFMoto 700MT India Launch and Expected Price

Awaiting confirmation on the potential launch in India

The key question that remains unanswered is whether the 700MT will make its way to India. Currently, CFMoto has announced that the smaller, lighter 450MT will be launching here first, with test rides having already taken place in Hyderabad last month. As for the 700MT, it certainly merits a place in the Indian market, given its impressive large-bike feel, practicality, and excellent value proposition.

As with any CFMoto model, uncertainties linger concerning long-term reliability and after-sales service, especially in India. The brand is carving a solid reputation in Europe and Australia regarding these matters, which is a promising indication. Ultimately, it will depend on how effectively their unnamed local partner’s service network can support these bikes in the region. For now, the 700MT stands as evidence that modern CFMoto is competitive, and others in the market should take note.
