During the global debut of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the company teased a new rugged SUV with a boxy silhouette. Recent patent images have emerged, showcasing the final design of this SUV, which is expected to be named the Toyota FJ Cruiser. It is being positioned as a more accessible option compared to the Fortuner.

What is the New Toyota FJ Cruiser?
The FJ name has a storied legacy within Toyota, with many generations of the Land Cruiser featuring the FJ designation, dating back to the FJ20 model introduced in 1955. The last SUV to utilize the FJ name was the retro-styled FJ Cruiser, produced from 2006 until 2022. This new model was anticipated to make its global debut last year, but the launch appears to have been postponed.

Design Based on a Modified IMV Ladder Frame
The patent images indicate that this new rugged SUV is an evolution of the Compact Cruiser EV concept showcased by Toyota in 2021. According to previous reports, the upcoming FJ Cruiser will utilize a modified version of the IMV ladder frame chassis, which also supports the Toyota Hilux Champ pickup currently sold in Thailand and Indonesia. This platform is derived from the IMV setup that underpins the Hilux, Fortuner, and Innova Crysta.
The patent for this SUV was filed last year, but the image has only recently come to light. The boxy silhouette is confirmed, along with a proper five-door design. It features pronounced front and rear fenders and thick C-pillars, with a vertically oriented rear. The front design includes rounded edges but maintains a rugged appearance with a rectangular grille, tall front bumper, and substantial body cladding. Additionally, the design incorporates a full-size spare wheel mounted on the rear door.
In terms of dimensions and powertrain, the future Toyota FJ Cruiser is expected to have a 2,750mm wheelbase, matching that of the Hilux Champ and Fortuner. Powertrain options are anticipated to include a 2.0-liter petrol engine seen in the Hilux Champ, a 2.7-liter petrol variant, and a 2.8-liter diesel engine utilized in the Fortuner. Some variants may also feature a basic 4WD setup similar to that found in the Fortuner and Hilux.
Will the Toyota FJ Cruiser Come to India?
While Toyota is exploring the addition of more SUVs to its lineup for India, it remains uncertain if the FJ Cruiser will be among them. The new SUV is expected to have its global debut in late 2025 or early 2026.
