Tata Avinya EV launch details

Tata Motors has generated significant excitement with the recent introduction of the Harrier EV, enhancing its electric vehicle (EV) lineup to a total of six models. The company is set to follow this launch with the unveiling of the Sierra EV later this year, ahead of a transition to its advanced Gen 3 skateboard EV architecture, which will form the basis for the Avinya series of electric vehicles. During an interview with Autocar India at the Harrier EV launch event, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, announced plans to introduce the Avinya brand in 2027.

  1. Initial Tata Avinya model targeted for 2027
  2. Will mark Tata’s first entirely electric vehicles
  3. Launch postponed due to shared EMA architecture with Jaguar Land Rover

This implies that the debut of the first Avinya model will be pushed back by a minimum of two years – the initial goal was a 2025 launch when the Avinya concept was first revealed in 2022. Earlier this year, it was anticipated that the first Avinya EV might arrive by 2026; however, the timeline has now shifted to 2027.

The first model (codenamed P1) will be a production version of the 2022 concept.

Reasons for the Delay of Tata Avinya EVs

To bring the Avinya EVs to market, Tata Motors had partnered with Jaguar Land Rover to utilize the latter’s EMA architecture. However, due to delays in Jaguar Land Rover’s local production plans in Tamil Nadu, Tata Motors is actively exploring alternative options. These may include a cost-effective version of the EMA architecture or potentially sourcing platforms from outside the company.

Tata Avinya EVs to Feature Skateboard Platform

While all of Tata’s current EVs, including the forthcoming Sierra EV, utilize an internal combustion engine (ICE) platform (the Gen 2 Acti.ev architecture), the Avinya models will be the first to adopt the Gen 3 skateboard dedicated electric platform. This innovation will provide flat floors, enhanced cabin layout, and striking styling, setting apart this high-end fleet of EVs. “Radical styling will debut with Avinya, whereas the Harrier EV represents an evolutionary development,” stated Srivatsa.

Earlier this January, it was exclusively reported that Tata Motors is investigating the development of five distinct models within the Avinya range, internally identified as P1, P2, P3, P4, and P5. A coupe-crossover concept named the Avinya X was presented at the Bharat Mobility Show, reportedly merchandising the P4 model from the anticipated lineup.

Avinya to Establish a New Premium EV Segment

The inaugural model from the Avinya collection, known as P1, will be produced at the Sanand facility of the company. This vehicle is well into its development phase and is based on the concept initially showcased in April 2022. Sources speculate that the P1 could carry a price tag exceeding Rs 35 lakh, positioning it as the most luxurious offering from Tata Motors until further premium editions are introduced.
